4 Ways NBA Top Shot Can Reward Team Sets

I recently completed the Cavs team set on NBA Top Shot, and the very first thing I started doing was dreaming of future utility for it. Top Shot has said they want their NFTs to be the currency for NBA fandom, and what better way than to reward people who have team sets complete.

Obviously as new team moments come in during the season, there will be increased complexity with this, so any of the benefits below could apply to “Series 1 complete,” “Series 2 complete,” or “Series 1 and Series 2 both complete.” The current/upcoming season, in this case being Series 3, would not apply until the season is complete and the series is closed. Anyhow, here’s what I’m dreaming up.

Airdrop Run it Back Moments

Run it Back (RIB) moments are a big bottleneck for people completing team sets. I got very lucky in buying my Anderson Varejao moment two days before the price doubled. Why not use these as a reward for collectors, rather than a nuisance for completing their favorite teams? When people have complete team sets, snapshot their wallets and airdrop them rare moments from their favorite squad. I’d go nuts for a rare Mark Price or Austin Carr moment, and if it was free, you better believe I’d be pumped enough to tell everybody who would listen.

Physical Rewards

I’d love Top Shot to start branching into physical rewards. Even if they simply give completed team sets the opportunity buy something physical, it could be cool. A few ideas I had included a picture that looks like your favorite moment to hang on the wall, a glass cube that looks like an NBA Top Shot moment to place on a table, or a limited-edition basketball like the Bored Ape Yacht Club dropped.

Either way, physical items related to Top Shot would be super fun and help bring our fandom for our teams and NBA Top Shot into the real world. This also would open the conversation more widely about the platform, as people would see these in your home and ask about them. Another physical reward option? Merch and player autographs. Why not? Jerseys, shirts, shorts, shoes, and more could be given as a reward to people who hold team sets.

Ticket Access

This feels obvious, but NBA Top Shot must give team set holders some sort of ticket access. They could do it a variety of ways. This could manifest itself as:

• Lotteries for courtside tickets or boxes
• The opportunity to purchase tickets before the public
• Free tickets for one game a year

This would give huge utility to collectors. NBA Top Shot has shown what they can do with the NBA Finals and Summer League contests, flying out select collectors to have amazing once-in-a-lifetime experiences. This is a smaller application of that, which rewards dedicated fans of the platform.

Special Events

Another obvious opportunity is special events. These could be player meet and greets, press conferences, or team-run events. Providing team set holders with these benefits encourages people to complete the sets. Plus, if these events are already happening, there’s no real additional cost. It’s simply providing a ticket to let people attend, but it’ll feel like a huge benefit to the fans.

I’m just scratching the surface here, and as time goes on, I have no doubt that NBA Top Shot will think of ways to bring value to team set holders. And regardless, I’ll keep collecting the Cavs, because at the end of the day, I’m a fan and a collector who loves the game.
