unfiltered. undercover. girl.
Hello humans. It’s almost half past midnight. I guess technically that makes today the 30th but every day in startup world seems to roll into the next so why bother tracking. We’re all fluid here, are we not? Boundless. Constant. Open. Much like the metaverse.
What is it really? Is it just a trend?
Metaverse appears to be the latest buzzword taking over from the swinging heights of popularity that put a spotlight on crypto, defi, and NFTs. Everyone from Zuckerberg to my mate’s grandma is talking about being in it, building it, becoming it. Metaverse is everything right now.
2021 has been a whirlwind and we’re only just over halfway through it. Does that even matter? Is it relevant? Who knows. What is time when you’re in the metaverse anyway? I often feel I am living in it right now, working remotely, connecting digitally, emotions expressed through technology and virtual spaces. Startup world and metaverse feel like one in the same.
This present physical universe really is changing. I can feel it, can’t you? Or does it only feel this way because I am now part of what some (my friends) may describe as an underground cult of mostly cashed up white males online, around the world talking about crypto and animals.
Many appear to own rather large collections of various digital creatures displayed as bizarrely grotesque and tasteless designs. But they love them. They flex them. They buy, sell, and trade them for real money (in the form of crypto) but mostly, it appears they do it for clout. For the recognition. To say, hey f*ck you cruel world, here I am. This is me.
And there’s something to that.
To be known, seen, and understood for exactly everything you are and accepted for it – that is worthy and an honourable pursuit and achievement. It bears weight as much as it bears witness to the individual choosing this path.
There’s a much deeper level of freedom that is being tapped into each time one of these digital assets is purchased. It is as if the owner is saying, “Here and now, I express myself. Whether momentarily or for the long term, a part of me is captivated by this very digital thing and through it, I can achieve what I want and do with it what I please.”
It is instant gratification. It is pure joy.
Perhaps then, the trends birthed by emerging tech, NFTs and life in the metaverse are not merely trends. Perhaps there’s something more to them, for they give humans the ability to freely express, connect, and share regardless of form or location or history. They represent the present and everything that is now. Speaking of which, it is now time for my weary eyes to close so that I can return to this screen again in a few hours to plug in, connect, and enter a makeshift metaverse blurred with my own reality.
So goodnight, dear startup world. Until tomorrow…
