An exciting new project just launched, and it has defi enthusiasts, pederasts and language nerds up in arms. Nonce finance, is a poorly named project that does something on Polygon.
What products they offer, who their target audience or what it may be forked from all take the backseat to what is an obvious question to a large portion of the English-speaking world. Why the name? Nonce Finance?
I remember a few years ago when I got into the space and learned that the word nonce can also mean number only used once, I thought It was funny. No big deal though, no fuss was made. It seems fairly inside baseball, and I figured, my grandma can self-host her money without ever reading or understanding the word nonce. But to come out and name the project nonce finance! Fuck man. If you haven’t been made aware, nonce is British slang for a pedophile. It also means that in American English as well, but it is much more anachronistic and is not often used this way today. So, a new product or protocol (game? Amm? Who the fuck cares what they offer), names themselves pedophile finance and then what? Brief and hilarious apology about how they were unaware of the slang term and their new super awesome name? Nope! All of CT argues about whether these matters.
To all the awesome posts about how nobody cares what words the British use, nobody cares what anything means to anyone else and why is it such a big deal? Why the fuck did I spend my morning reading your takes if you do not care? Clearly, whichever side you fall on this issue, a lot of fucking people care. I’m writing about it right now and lots of weirdos all of the world has been writing about it in not only our little space, but the mainstream media. To the guy on twitter saying that since the word appears 8 times in the bitcoin white paper, then it must be a widely used and understood word, WTF? Nobody in the world gives a shit about our white papers man, that is precisely why representation matters. No one is reading white papers. Nobody is reading your takes or my takes right now except for me and the other nerds that inhabit our insular space. Lots of people have rightfully pointed out that many words have multiple meanings and confusion often occurs… this is true.
Now that everyone is discussing it, there is no confusion. It’s just a weird hill to die on. I recognize that lots of people just want to die on hills, as that is what we do these days. A few larger CT accounts have opinions on this, and this has caused others to paint it as a person vs person feud. This has nothing to do with all the clout you guys can get from proving to our small group who can argue better. This crypto space is so happy to divide and attack each other it’s easy to forget that everyone outside of this community attacks us as well. We want this tech to help more people, right? You want them to be helped by this tech or for them to buy in and help you by increasing the value of your bags, right? All of this is made more difficult by us all being sniveling assholes that will argue about every fucking thing.
Lots of us are excited as hell for things that fall under the umbrella of “cryptocurrencies”. As of now, to the people that don’t share this space with us, we are criminals, money launderers, drug dealers, evil libertarians, environment haters, nerds, selfish tech bros, cultist old creeps yelling on stage, rich fucks that are out of touch with the problems of the common man etc.… let’s not add Nonce Finance to the easily applied to us list of names that the uninformed use. Let us try to make ourselves harder to “other”. I mean what the fucking fuck?!?
