It is now officially two weeks since the release of Tom Sachs’ Rocket Factory. The August 1st Ethereum network release consisted of allowing holders of the free to mint Tom Sachs patches to now mint rocket components an hour before the general release, selling out entirely in minutes for the patch holders.
The rocket components consist of a nose cone, body and tail assembly. These three components are needed to create your own Tom Sachs: Rocket. Now just like any minting process, the NFT’s purchased are random, creating the possibility for minters to have a complete rocket very difficult.
Component holders immediately got to work during the chaos the randomized components caused. At the time of minting, all holders were unaware of the “task” the project was aiming for. Some began trading, some began flipping, but most held their components due to lack of information the project provided. It was not until a few hours after the minting that a video explaining the “task” surfaced on the website.
Component holders were to collect at least three of the components required to create a rocket. The assembly process would consist of burning your three components and minting a completed rocket NFT in exchange. This allowed for thousands of possible combinations due to the variety of logos and cartoons Tom decided to implement onto each component. But only allowing a total of 1,000 rockets to ever exist. He also included rarity/scarcity to the availability of specific brands. Some components containing stickers to enhance rarity. Ultimately, the two major factors of the rockets created were having a “perfect” rocket which meant all brands were the same, or a “frankenrocket,” which meant at least one brand was different the other two on the rocket.
Euphoria ensued. Tom Sachs fans outside of the NFT space began to enter the party, prominent NFT collectors wanted their share, and NFT investors saw opportunity to capitalize. But most importantly the “task” at hand was now known. Everyone assumed minting your rocket NFT was the final piece of the puzzle. I assumed it was a fun project Tom was experimenting with. After all his art is usually the exploration on the fascination of consumerism.
Another video surfaced on the website explaining how upon having your completed rocket NFT, you would be able to schedule a “launch” on the rocket factory website. Tom would then hand make the rocket you assembled, record the launch of your rocket, and finally have the physical rocket sent to you. The video then explains how these three items now create a trinity, therefore the rocket NFT will now be all three items combined.
Beautiful, right? The ability for us to own a Tom Sachs art sculpture along with the NFT. But to everyone’s surprise the details of creating your rocket did not end there. Tom and Co. released an article on their Medium blog stating, those who created a rocket will have the chance to additionally receive added benefits from Tom. For example:
Art, with utility… I cannot stress enough the success and influence of Tom Sachs in the traditional art world. His artworks are staples of our generation. And for him to enter this space, accept it and pioneer the limitless possibilities is simply amazing to see. It is very important to note that this project is far from over.
In summary, there are many ideas hinted by Tom and team going forward. As much as I believe Damien Hirst’s – The Currency is a well thought out project. We cannot deny the intricacies and interoperability of this project far excel anything we have seen before in this space. Very few projects have left their supporters on edge of their seats, excited and ready to continue with the progression of the project. I encourage you to follow these traditional artists, as they begin to enter the space and bridge some physical with digital. There will be a lot who succeed just as there will be a lot who fail. However, the important thing to notice, is we are at the forefront of this art renaissance, art exploration projects such as these are solidifying what users in this space have been preaching for years.
