This week on Coffee with Captain, Chris and Steve head to NFT NYC. Monday and Tuesday were normal days. We talked about another memecoin that cooked and more sell pressure on Ethereum NFTs. I’m not sure when or if these two narratives will flip. The rest of the week we talked about NFT NYC 2024 and some of the variety of experiences the Coffee Crew had. Listening to their experiences always reminds me how bullish I am on IRL events. There’s nothing like giving a web3 friend a hug when you see them in person.
In case you missed any of the shows, below is a small recap of each day with links to the podcast on Apple and Spotify. Links to other streaming platforms can be found on our buzzsprout page. Check out the timestamp if you want to catch the specific interviews.
Monday
Should NFT Projects Drop Memecoins?
Sartoshi, of the MFers project, recently dropped a memecoin and it attracted a significant amount of volume.Shortly after we saw some seemingly unofficial project memecoins dropped. Should other projects follow the MFer model? It’s likely the projects dropping any type of token would be a bad play in the long-term and unlikely to work in the short term. More importantly, what works for one project doesn’t always work for others. The MFers memecoin seemed well thought out and timely.
What are the MFers all about? What type of vibe does that community have? We hear a little bit about the community from random members. The cool thing about MFers is that seemingly nobody cares about the price or has any expectations. MFers own the NFT just to own it. This is a recipe for success in the long-term.

Are Ethereum NFTs Dead?
Market sentiment on Ethereum NFTs still seems to be bearish despite recent spikes of liquidity in the crypto market. Will we ever see the return of 2021 highs? That is very unlikely, but we might see a rebound of NFTs from the 2021 class.
Machi recently launched a memecoin after collecting presale. The memecoins market cap and price movement sparks a larger conversation about individual’s sentiment on him. Cap gives his views on Machi and unpacks some of the criticisms he may have received.

NFT NYC 2024 Preview
Wednesday was a light news day. We were without Cap as he was in the middle of a flight to New York. Steve made it to New York a day early and participated in some of the pre-NFT NYC festivities. The episode revolved mainly around a preview of NFT NYC and what their experiences have been so far this year.

Thursday
Don’t Miss Opportunities + NFT NYC Day 2
Cryptopunks prices have started to buy and nobody is quite sure why. Are holders trying to get liquid to purchase some of the major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum? Can the continual sell pressure on Ethereum NFTs continue? Cap seems to think a spike will return at some point. We’ll likely never see the 2020 run NFTs experienced, but at some point the older NFTs will reverse from their lows.
For now, attention is fractured and it’s easy to miss new opportunities to make money. Stablecoins on different platforms are yielding a nice return and many people don’t even know about them. You can’t chase all the potential opportunities, but you need to be open-minded and prepared to change directions.

Friday
NFT NYC Day 3
Many members of the Coffee Crew attended NFT NYC, including a few who were speakers. There was a lot of constructive feedback to share about the conference, so we’ll spend a short amount of time on it. One issue was the pricing. Conferences can charge a premium when the experience is top notch, but you can’t charge high end prices for a subpar experience. There were also a lot of complaints about the venue being too big for the size of attendees.
I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities to improve the conference and hopefully NFT NYC will take those into consideration. Aside from that, IRL events continue to be undefeated. The Coffee Crew shares their experience with the multitude of Thursday’s events. I’m a big proponent of making it to an IRL event if you can. I still need to find one that I can make for 2024.

Wrap Up
Cap and Steve made it through NFT NYC and only partially lost their voice. The week was a little abnormal, but it’s beneficial to hear about the IRL experiences. Check your calendars and see if you can make it to one! Next week’s Coffee with Captain should be back to normal. We’ve even got a special guest lined up for Monday. If you missed week 13, then you can review it here.
