Introduction
The Bitcoin halvening is finally upon us on week 16 of Coffee with Captain. There was a lot of leadup throughout the week on what moves should be made. This was coupled with market fluctuations due to the Israel and Iran controversy. Were you prepared for the halving? What moves did you make? We also had a couple of early week interviews from To The Moon Cards & Collectibles and Maya Spirits. Two different groups, but both very interesting. This week was a good one.
In case you missed any of the shows, below is a small recap of each day with links to the podcast on Apple and Spotify. Links to other streaming platforms can be found on our buzzsprout page. Check out the timestamp if you want to catch the specific interviews.
Monday
Digital Cards & Collectibles + Maya Spirits Summit
During the weekend we had a significant market pullback amidst the threat of global conflict. Cap and Steve run through what their thought processes are in a time like that. In my opinion, it’s always best to have a little bit of extra capital laying around for severe dips, if you’re able to. In other weekend news, Doodles and Coachella had a collaboration, but we heard surprisingly little about it. It will be interesting to watch Doodles combine web3 IP and culture with the mainstream.
Later on the show we had two sets of special guests. The creators of To The Moon Cards and Collectibles, JayRob and Tom, joined to talk about their latest drop. It was interesting to hear about their start together in the VeeFriends community. From there ripping card packs turned into a partnership. They currently go live on Twitch 2-3x a week and open packs from various popular projects in web3. It really emphasized the intersection between the blockchain and physical collectibles.
Liam, Cofounder of Maya Spirits, and phenomenal artist Inna also joined the Coffee with Captain to talk about great initiatives they’re completing with the help of blockchain technology. The main mission of Maya Spirits is to find solutions in climate change and gender inequality. It’s no secret that NFTs have a bad reputation in my countries throughout the world, but Maya Spirits is trying to change that narrative. Check out their website.

Tuesday
Crypto Pullbacks + College Decisions
Tuesday was unconventional as the cold open about Cap’s grades turns into a larger discussion surrounding college. The Coffee Crew gave all different angles you can think of, don’t worry. At the end of the day all that can really be said is “it depends.”
We also continue the market discussion as the Bitcoin halvening approaches. The Coffee Crew gives the bull and bear case around Bitcoin’s price action and makes a couple predictions. What’s unique is the attention Bitcoin Runes are getting. Franklin Templeton posted information about Runes, a niche crypto product. It’s interesting that those within tradFi folks are paying this close attention. Friday we talk about all things Bitcoins to prepare for the halvening.

Wednesday
DeFi Protocols + 3rd Party Airdrops
It’s time to talk about DeFi protocols again. Can they be risky? Absolutely, but they can also open up a wide variety of opportunities. What is the biggest draw of liquidity to blockchains? It’s typically their DeFi. Before you use it though, it’s important to understand the nuance surrounding lending/borrowing. Take some time and educate yourself as the bull run continues to heat up
One of the bigger topics of the day surrounded $KARMA’s dysfunction and how it pulled OnChainMonkey in the crosshairs. Is the OCM team to blame? Ultimately, it’s not their fault, but they did play some part in the situation. The larger question asked was “Should teams endorse 3rd party memecoins?” I can confidently say, for a majority of projects, that’s worth more trouble than any benefit you get. There is way more downside, especially if you’re linked to the memecoins failure or demise. PSA: Most memecoins trend to 0.

Thursday
Yuga Labs Sells Off 2 NFT Games
Yuga Labs made the decision to sell the HV-MTL and Legends of the Mara (LOTM) IP to Faraway, a game dev studio and publisher. It looks like Yuga is cutting some extra bulk and refocusing on what made them a successful company. In my opinion, this was absolutely the right move. The unfortunate drawback is any individual who bought HV-MTL or LOTM to get exposure to the Yuga Labs ecosystem.
Yuga took a big swing to become a gaming company. The reality is this venture was unsuccessful. To my knowledge, Yuga will continue its work on Otherside, but even that is losing the faith of many within the ecosystem. The good news is BAYC overall sentiment seemed to improve following Yuga’s effort to get back to the basics.

Friday
Bitcoin Halvening + Understanding What’s New
The Bitcoin halvening is finally upon us and Friday’s show was all about Bitcoin. We talked a little about Leonidas and the controversy surrounding Bitcoin Runes. I abstain from any real comments because I’m not educated enough on the topic. We also talked about market expectations post Bitcoin halvening. The halving occurs every 4 years, so this is the fourth halving since its creation in 2008. The difference this time around is Bitcoin broke previous all time highs pre-halving when it had only ever happened post-halving. The speculation is that the Bitcoin ETF caused the early breakthrough.
Mike Chavez came on late into the show and took us down the technicals surrounding Bitcoin ordinals, Runes, UTXOs and BRC20s. Mike is extremely bullish on the ecosystem and heavily invested. If I’m honest, a lot of the technical aspects were over my head. I haven’t dove deep into the technicals of the Bitcoin network with things like UTXOs and BRC20s. The user experience still feels atrocious, but there 100% is money to be made (and lost). Personally, I’m holding on to my Bitcoin for now, but may play with very small amounts in the near future.
We had a bonus couple of hours surrounding some controversial comments from the creator of Bitcoin Puppets about the Yuga founders. Spicy Cap made an appearance and everyone was able to disagree without being disagreeable, so it’s worth checking out.

Wrap Up
We took some time this week to prepare for the Bitcoin halvening. This is the fourth halving in Bitcoin’s existence and the markets all over the place. I know the Coffee Crew is excited for what we hope is a massive bull run in the coming days. We’ll continue to host shows and inform those interested in web3. As always, thanks for your continued support. The show wouldn’t be what it was without the listeners. If you missed week 15, make sure to check it out here.
