Solana memecoin season was partially carried over into week 12 of Coffee with Captain. We definitely see it start to calm down as the week progresses. Gaming on-chain is starting to get hot and we may see a summer spark. We need Web3 games to be sticky, have a community and be seamless to onboard new users. The CEOs of Magic Eden and Floor dropped by this week to speak on the amazing tech they’re building. It wouldn’t be Coffee with Captain if we didn’t talk a little BAYC. What do holders want from The Club and what is their strategy for 2024?
In case you missed any of the shows, below is a small recap of each day with links to the podcast on Apple and Spotify. Links to other streaming platforms can be found on our buzzsprout page. Check out the timestamp if you want to catch the specific interviews.
Monday
Solana Memecoin Presale Meta
The Solana memecoin presale meta makes me question if we’ve lost our sanity. The problem is when there’s money to be made, logic goes out the door. The era of the internet is all about memes, so it’s hard to not want to participate. If you want to participate, then that’s fine. I know I do. But it’s important to understand the casino-like nature of memecoins and recognize the risk you’re taking.
The presale discussion brought up a lot of mixed opinions from the Coffee Crew. Some people have a higher risk tolerance and accept whatever may happen. Others don’t even understand the risk tolerance, but blindly follow hoping for the next 100x. Just remember the mantra “play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

What is BAYC’s Strategy in 2024?
Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most polarizing collections on Ethereum and arguably in all of the NFT world. Everyone has an opinion on the direction BAYC should be going. What do members want out of The Club today? The Coffee Crew gives some of their own desires. The 2024 strategy seems to be a little clearer according to a private BAYC discord call. They are focused on four things in 2024: The Clubhouse, Made by Apes, Apefest and Collabs. I’m interested to see if this four-point focus will finally starts to give clarity to BAYC.

Wednesday
Magic Eden: More Than a Marketplace with Jack Lu
On Wednesday’s episode we discuss Solana memecoin season seemingly starting to ramp down… for now. We know that memecoin season will be back, but for now you can take a breather. Base, an Ethereum layer-2, is starting to catch a little more action though. It may be worth checking out what they’re building
We had a surprise visit from CEO and CoFounder of Floor, Chris Maddern. The Floor app is making purchasing/managing NFTs fun and easy. Digital wallets are a well known barrier to adoption, but Floor wants to provide simple payment rails for web3. The company even has plans to create a wallet in the future. Floor fundamental believes in self-custody and wants to make that as safe as possible. One aspect of that is being able to recover your keys in the even that you lose them. Listen in to find out more.
Later, we’re joined by CEO and CoFounder of Magic Eden, Jack Lu. The team at Magic Eden believes in being within the community to learn and grow what is needed in web3. As we’ve talked about plenty on the show, it’s critical to be tapped into the web3 culture and understand user behavior. Magic Eden is in the process of expanding their brand beyond “the everything marketplace” to “the Amazon of web3.” This is a pretty lofty goal, but I love it. If any team is positioned to accomplish this, then it’s the team over at Magic Eden.

Thursday
Gaming On-Chain
Blur farming continues to be a frequent topic of discussion. Is there any way to stop a small group of wallets from dumping NFTs into bids and driving down floors? Realistically, a massive influx of buyers or a different money-making opportunity are likely the only solution.
The narrative of on-chain games is starting to heat up. This summer may see a bigger pivot into gaming as more games emerge. Web3 games need to be sticky, have a community and be seamless to onboard new users. The problem with adoption is asking people to stop playing COD, Fortnite, CSGO for a worse version of the same game, but you get an NFT or tokens. Evil Plan stopped by the show and suggested builders should create games for the adoption that’s already here. Crypto is an early adopter market with highly engaged users. Listen in for more of the discussion.

Friday
Magic Eden Wallet, Grass Protocol & Doing Good in the World
Friday was a classic hodge podge of an episode. We talked a little bit about the Grass, a decentralized data farming network. Why is Grass getting hot all of a sudden? Check into the article I linked.
Jack Lu talked to us earlier this week about all they’re building at Magic Eden. Today, we had a discussion about the Magic Eden wallet. The digital wallet is designed to be a multichain hub for all your digital assets. Multiple individuals call it intuitive and ease of use. It’s probably worth checking out, even if you don’t want to. We finished out the episode with a couple of heartwarming things going on within the space. It’s definitely worth giving it a listen.

Wrap Up
Solana and Magic Eden are starting to heat up, as the users keep increasing. Will this carry on throughout 2024 or will things shift at some point? Memecoin season is on pause. Are we finally starting to see Bitcoin and Ethereum chop sideways? Alt coin season could be right around the corner. That’s it for week 12. Make sure to review week 11 if you missed it here.
