Roaring Kitty makes his return during week 20 of Coffee with Captain. Is it the real him? I think so, but I guess only time will tell. We also had a great group of guests that talked IRL events, clothing, and content platforms. This week really centered around social media, SocialFi, content creators and what all that looks like in the current state of things.
In case you missed any of the shows, below is a small recap of each day with links to the podcast on Apple and Spotify. Links to other streaming platforms can be found on our buzzsprout page. Check out the timestamp if you want to catch the specific interviews.
Monday
Curating In Real Life Events & Landing Sponsorships
Steve was out on Monday, so special cohost Gigi filled in on Coffee with Captain. If you’ve been around web3 for awhile, then you’ve probably heard how beneficial IRL events are for creating relationships. How do craft a great event? What should you be on the lookout for?
Gigi has an extensive background in event hosting and she shared some of her knowledge. It’s important to remember that everything won’t go perfectly so be prepared to adapt. She also dives into landing sponsorships to fund your event. We also talked about monetizing your content from social media platforms. If you’re looking to get involved, then become like a student. Learn from others. Don’t be afraid to ask. I think this was a great episode and Gigi provided a lot of great feedback.

The Return of Roaring Kitty Pumps GME & AMC Stonks
After three years, Roaring Kitty’s X account has become active again. There’s speculation that this isn’t Roaring Kitty aka DeepFuckingValue (DFV) aka Keith Gill. For those unaware, Gill was widely responsible for the short squeeze on GameStop ($GME) in 2021. What could be the meaning of the WallStreetBets superstar’s return?
The real question is can GME have another run? The macro conditions are so much different than the first time around. Groceries, insurance, rent, etc. have all increased significantly. Retail investors are already buzzing on platforms like Reddit and X, but there’s still hesitation on whether it’s the real Gill. I may or may not have a few shares of GME just in case. I’m ready to run it back if everyone else is too. Obviously this will draw in retail investors, but I’m interested to see the larger impact on crypto.
We also have the return of Wicked Craniums to talk to the Coffee crew about their Wicked Wristbands launch. They’re heading to Vegas this year for Bone Shake 2024. You can check out the website for the presale information. It’s live now.

Wednesday
Crypto Catalyst + Vonga Product Launch
What will be the next catalyst for crypto? We talk about some of the options. Will it be memecoins? Memecoins have the power to build community and we’ve seen it take over cycles (Doge, Shiba Inu, Dog Wif Hat, etc.). It may be content creators that launch the next catalyst as they discuss crypto and memecoins to their followers on various platforms. We also discussed the potential of custodial services, like Coinbase, as a better avenue to bring in people. What are the reputational risks that crypto are facing right now? Especially after the FTX fallout. What’s going to draw people in to participate with the technology.
We’re joined by long term friend of the show, Von Frontin, to talk about the launch of his new clothing brand, Vonga. Von is being very intentional with how much blockchain is included with their advertising. At the heart of it, Vonga is a high end clothing company that will compete with the likes of Fabletics, Lululemon, etc. There will also be NFC chip integrations in the future to provide additional value for those interested. Be on the lookout for Club Vonga, their rewards program that will be built in over time.

Becoming a Content Platform with Magic Eden’s CEO
There’s opportunity to create content within our niche sector of web3, but it requires consistency. We also discuss the potential impact of RWAs and DeFi on future participants. Both of these avenues have a chance to revolutionize the finance sector in a meaningful way.
Steve is a part of the newest Magic Eden Ambassador program! Later we’re joined by Magic Eden CEO, Jack Lu, to discuss Magic Eden’s journey towards becoming a content platform. What I love about Magic Eden is they’re always learning and trying to innovate. Their mission is centered around becoming more than an NFT company. They’ve been viewed as the Solana marketplace, then Bitcoin marketplace, but they want to expand outside of those. Magic Eden equates themself to Netflix. They want to be a content platform. The way to get users to interact with your platform is having really interesting content.

Friday
Pump.fun, Fantasy.top & Tesla Talk
Tesla talk dominated the first 55 minutes with Steve’s new car purchase looming. So if you’re interested in a new car, then be sure to check it out. Later in the show we dive into the $2 million pump.fun exploit. Pump.fun, for those unaware, is a platform where you can launch memecoins in Solana with limited risk. A former doxxed employee took advantage of a “withdraw authority” using their position in the company. The story has continued to unfold throughout the week and apparently has returned all the funds. You can read about the post mortem here.
We also touch on the Fantasy.top actions by some of the “hero card” players. There has been a lot of clickbait and lies that may be seen as unsportsmanlike. Steve continues to worry about the manipulation of the contest, but I still believe that’s the nature of crypto degens. We will always try to break things and find loopholes. I’m also interested to see how the market responds to Fantasy.top launching multiple tournaments, which in theory should eat up a lot of the listings. On a positive note, Blast has allowed content creators with quality to be highlighted more.

Wrap Up
That wraps up another week on Coffee with Captain. We had a couple of great interviews and an amazing guest cohost. Roaring Kitty (or is it?) made his return to X, but everywhere is still waiting to see what that really means, or memes. We also talked a lot about social media, SocialFi and content in general. Thanks for everyone who tunes in and we look forward to having you all with us next week. If you missed week 19, make sure to check it out here.
