Welcome to week 24 of Coffee with Captain. This week turned out to be full of controversy. ThreadGuy asked Andrew Tate for an interview, Elon Musk called out Apple, ApeCoin DAO announced a $100M bill and more. We did get to interview a great group of artists and project founders. Kjetil Golid, Bored Elon, Ed Balloon, Vanson Leathers and TravelSwap. This was one of our most action packed weeks, so you definitely want to go back through.
In case you missed any of the shows, below is a small recap of each day with links to the podcast on Apple and Spotify. Links to other streaming platforms can be found on our buzzsprout page. Check out the timestamp if you want to catch the specific interviews.
Monday
ThreadGuy & Andrew + Risk / Reward Art Drop with Kjetil Golid
We all know about ThreadGuy’s (TG) interview with Iggy Azalea after her launch of $MOTHER. TG decided to shoot his shot at an interview with Andrew Tate and it has generated a lot of controversy. Some people think it’s a bad career move if he interviewed a character as questionable as Tate and others think it can help build his platform. Personally, I don’t understand why anyone is clout chasing Tate. I don’t think he’s a good person and there’s better ways to improve your brand.
Later in the show we were joined by artist Kjetil Golid to discuss Risk / Reward, a generative art project in partnership with Red Bull Racing, Bybit and Art on Internet. Golid shared his background in data science, IT and how he’s blended that with generative art for about 10 years. Risk / Reward focuses on color selection and color arrangement. This piece had a 377 edition decision matrix integrated with the Red Bull Racing drivers and their race results. The drop happened on 6/11, but you can find them on the secondary market. There are at least two more artist drops coming in the future. For access to the mint, you can pick up a Velocity Pass.

Elon Musk vs Apple + Massive Multiplayer Events with Bored Elon
Elon Musk took to the X timeline to publicly oppose Apple’s plan to integrate openAI into their system. Musk is threatening to limit Apple products for those who work at his facilities. Only time will tell if Apple is prepared to go to war with Musk. He’s an industry disrupter who has a ton of capital. It’s a little surprising to see Apple go with a 3rd party app, but it may just buy them time until they create a better AI model for themselves.
Later on the show the Coffee Crew is joined by Bored Elon to discuss Edison, a project focused on creating a massive multiplayer experience for the future. Bored Elon comes from the traditional gaming world and entered the world of web3 in 2021. Edison is born from his experience with Yuga’s Otherside and his own digital persona. This project launched in the fall of last year and has provided 6 massive multiplayer events. It’s a complex idea, but he’s still developing it. Edison is a web2 game with an additional web3 layer as an option. I haven’t had the opportunity to play it yet, but the concept seems interesting.

Wednesday
Lil Pudgys Pump, Ed Balloon Visits & Vanson Leathers Interview
Lil Pudgys were swept up, but we’re still not sure what caused the buying spree. Typically, a sweep like that is followed by some sort of news being front run. There has been speculation of a token, but those reports seem to have been denied. Luca has no reason for a token and would likely only hurt the Pudgy Penguin company. The brand continues to integrate into stores across the globe. I’m still upset I wasn’t able to grab a Pudgy Penguin during the bear market.
Ed Balloon briefly joins the Coffee Crew to discuss a drop called The Narrator, which is inspired by the space and community. He discusses the inspiration a little more in depth on the show. Ed also talks about the different mediums he expresses his art and why. It was awesome to hear.
Lastly, were joined by the Vanson Leathers team. This brand has been around for over 50 years, but hadn’t yet dove into web3. There continues to be a lot of negative sentiment around NFTs in the news, but The Aspiring Nobody (Greg) was able to link up with Vanson Leathers to help provide a bridge between their web2 business and the world of web3. Positive experiences like this help spread the good news of web3.

The State of Crypto on X + Vacation with TravelSwap
What in the world is happening on the X app? We have a crazy range of celebrities launching memecoins, most of which are rugs. It’s important to remember what happened in 2021. There were people and projects that made ridiculous promises to pump a floor price and they’re all basically at 0. We also touched on the new Moonbirds art release, which has seemingly pleased most members. However, Moonbirds continue to remain largely irrelevant. They didn’t even take advantage of their new art activation to garner attention on the X timeline.
Later, we’re joined by Erik to discuss TravelSwap, a vacation rental business that integrates crypto into the purchasing process. TravelSwap is Expedia’s only crypto partner. They didn’t want to personally dive into crypto, but were interested in partnering with a business that brought them a new demographic. TravelSwap also doesn’t mark up hotel rooms because price is the most common factor when booking a place. In the future, TravelSwap will have a hotel marketplace to combat the $8bn lost per year in non refundable hotel fees. Additionally, they’ll be integrating an omnichain rewards protocol that gives rewards in a variety of ways, including memecoins. This company is highly touted and I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

Friday
The ApeCoin DAO’s $100M Banana Bill
Paradigm is back at it again. This time they raised $850M to invest in early-stage crypto projects. The company has had a pretty good track record, so it will be interesting to see where the money flows. All eyes are on Blast’s token generation event (TGE). If that goes well, then it could be a nice catalyst for the crypto ecosystem.
The big discussion was around the ApeCoin DAO and the dysfunction that surrounds it. A $100M proposal called “The Banana Bill” was recently dropped. The focus seems to be around incentivizing partners to build on ApeChain and users to participate on ApeChain. For many, the proposal seems to be a copy and paste of the leadership of the current DAO. There’s questions around the salary, KPIs, accountability and much more. There seems to be a lot of bureaucracy surrounding the ApeCoin DAO and it’s hindering their ability to function well. As an outsider, I can’t imagine myself ever wanting to participate in the DAO.
