Reclaimed Elephants: The Untamed Elephants Story
I recently interviewed Adam Ghahramani, who has acquired the Untamed Elephants project, to get a behind the scenes look at what went down.
For those of you who don’t know, Untamed Elephants is under new management. This is phenomenal news as the project which used to take over twitter with their Stampede Sundays, had been teetering about for some time now. The project was lacking direction, the Founder had gone MIA, and the community was restless.
Before we begin talking about the future for Untamed Elephants, we’ll take a brief look at their past. Untamed Elephants launched around the beginning of July and rapidly became quite popular on Twitter garnering heavy usage as individuals’ profile pictures. The community was rabid and the Discord activity was popping to show for it. The initial project excitement withered, but one thing remained the same – Stampede Sundays were lit. Stampede Sundays consisted of a barrage of buying, tweeting and excitement resulting in some giveaways.
The little bumps on the chart below typically fall on a Sunday, and then you can see that the average sale price slowly trends higher and higher.
As you can see after what looks like some amazing growth to kickoff August, all of a sudden everything tapers off. No hype, volume down, average sale price is down…what happened? The founder mysteriously went MIA shortly after releasing the Untamed Elephants companions. The community grows restless and is trying to understand what is next, where is the project going now? The founder remains quiet, not sharing too much information. Until he drops the following bombshell…
The community quickly rallied behind their champion – VikingDad. VikingDad made a public statement about potentially making a bid to acquire the project, and was promptly banned from the discord. The community was up in arms and it seemed like things could take a turn for the worst, but this is where Adam Ghahramani enters our story. Adam has a 22 year public professional presence. He is a turnaround aficionado, community builder, serial entrepreneur, journalist and consultant.
Adam crossed paths with the Untamed Elephants through word of mouth; he’d heard about the project and the community, but at the time did not own any elephants. During an adrenaline fueled move, Adam dove head first into looking to acquire the project. He reached out to the original founder to begin negotiations on a price. They landed on a price tag of 15 Eth, to be delivered in 3 tranches as ownership was transferred to Adam.
During what I can only imagine is a heart pumping moment, Adam transferred the first tranche to the founder without truly knowing if he would stay hold up his end of the bargain. From Adam’s perspective during the purchase, the founder acted professionally and was relieved when everything was transferred into his possession. There were a couple items he had to go back to make sure were transferred properly, but otherwise everything went smoothly.
Adam needed to work quickly to begin saving the project. The first order of business was to address the community, get everybody unbanned and start turning things around. This was a bumpy time as the community had a lot of questions and even VikingDad was suspicious at first. During the Ask Me Anything (AMA) a lot of people thought he was the original founder doxxing himself and taking over.
It took some 1:1 discussions and time before the community began to embrace Adam. VikingDad was reestablished as a Discord mod and eventually was promoted to a full ownership role of the Discord. This was done in the true spirit of decentralizing the project, the community drives the relationship with the project, not the other way around.
The team that has come together to bring Untamed Elephants into the future have some lofty goals and expectations. The boring janitorial work related to running a project needs to be executed effectively while setting up plans for the short and long term roadmap. Untamed Elephants is transforming themselves from an NFT project that supports elephants, to a community that supports elephants first and are joined together by an NFT.
The short-term roadmap does include completing the creation of the third NFT from the original Untamed Elephants roadmap, the combination of the elephant and their companion owl to create a new NFT. Adam and team will be constantly looking for ways to do cool stuff that surprises and delights the community but refuses to do dumb gimmicks and admits that the floor price will never be a KPI. (Agree 100%, people who focus too much on the !floor drive me bonkers.) Do not worry friends, I made sure to confirm that SUNDAY STAMPEDES will remain an Untamed Elephant tradition but going forward may contain a charitable aspect as well!
Reclaiming and rebuilding the Untamed Elephants brand is his core focus going forward. There is currently a hunt for a new logo design, multiple conversations with different charities most notably Saving Ganesh. Saving Ganesh is an organization focused on the support and protection of elephants and their natural habitats. They have history spanning over 10 years in the space and were founded by Philip Price who had the idea when executive producing a documentary “Elephants of Paradise”. Untamed Elephants is looking to build long lasting partnerships with organizations to grow together and do good in the world, not just make a one-time donation.
The charitable aspects of Untamed Elephants will come in part from secondary sales and in part from Adam bankrolling some major initiatives. Adam and his team have their work cut out for them. I believe that projects with a charitable focus will continue to carve out their niche in the space, so I’m excited to see this project return to prominence. Adam also mentioned he is working on another interesting project hellofam.wine which means that Elephants and Wine will be in the same universe going forward…
